Guadalupe Paz

Mezzo-Soprano

Tijuana-born Mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Paz graduated from the Conservatorio Arrigo Pedrollo in Vicenza, Italy. She is a frequent guest artist at the National Opera Company of Bellas Artes in Mexico City.

2025-26 engagements include performances as Maddalena in Rigoletto with Òpera de Bellas Artes (Mexico) and singing the title role in Carmen, Isabella in L’Italiana in Algeri with CONARTE (Mexico) and the title role in Carmen with San Diego Opera. The mezzo-soprano debuted at the Carmel Bach Festival and returns to Apollo’s Fire for Mozart’s Requiem and Requiem for the Ancestors. She joins the La Jolla Symphony as mezzo soloist in Beethoven’s Mass in C and the Glacier Symphony as alto soloist in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2.

In 2024, Guadalupe Paz had a remarkable year, showcasing her versatility and talent in various productions. She sang the role of Galatea in Centro Nacional de las Artes’ production of Aci, Galatea e Polifemo and portrayed La Mujer in El Milagro del Recuerdo as part of the Equal Voices Project with San Diego Opera. Guadalupe made her company debut with Opera San Jose as Paula in Florencia en el Amazonas, which received critical acclaim. She also performed De Falla’s El Amor Brujo with the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra in Brazil, further expanding her international presence. She made a role and company debut as Theresa Alvarez in the world premiere of Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek’s The Listeners at Opera Philadelphia. Furthermore, Guadalupe earned outstanding reviews for her performance in Handel’s Messiahwith the early music ensemble Apollo’s Fire. The Chicago Classical review praised her, stating, “Mezzo soprano Guadalupe Paz was this roster’s secret weapon, with a throaty, amber-hued tone that, rather than cut through a hall, invited the audience to listen in. Her dark timbre paired with her deliberate pacing and elegant phrasing to great effect…”

2022-2023 performances included her debut at the Mainly Mozart Festival, Frida Kahlo in The last dream of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera by Gabriela Lena Frank and Nilo Cruz in addition to Mercedes in Carmen and Mistress of the Novices in Suor Angelica with San Diego Opera. Other roles include the title role in Montezuma by Carl H. Graun, Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, Isabella in L’Italiana in AlgeriRosina in Il barbiere di SivigliaAngelina in La CenerentolaHänsel in Hänsel und GretelSuzuki in Madama ButterflyOlga in Eugene OneginIsolier in Le Comte OryMaddalena and Marchesa Melibea in Il Viaggio a ReimsLucilla in L’Occasione fa il ladroErnestina in La Scala di SetaLa Messaggiera in L’Orfeoand Dorabella in Cosí fan tutte.

On the concert stage, Ms. Paz has performed gala concerts alongside tenor Javier Camarena at Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City, with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Oviedo at the Auditorio Príncipe Felipe de Asturias, and with the Bellas Artes Orchestra at Bellas Artes Theater in Mexico City. The mezzo’s concert repertoire includes Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Bach’s Magnificat and Johannes Passion, Handel’s Messiah, and Mozart’s Requiem and Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Choral Fantasy, Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Petite Messe SolennelleF Minor Mass by Bruckner, and The Glagolitic Mass by Leoš Janaček. Ms. Paz’ repertoire also includes performances of  Gustav Mahler’s 2nd and 3rd Symphonies performed at Palacio de Bellas Artes with the National Symphony Orchestra, Cary Ratliff’s Ode to Common Things with La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, Mario Lavista’s Tres Canciones para Orquesta y Mezzosoprano, Manuel De Falla’s Siete Canciones Populares, Romeo and Juliette by Hector Berlioz, and Kurt Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins with the Aspen Music Festival.

During her career Ms. Paz has been a recipient of diverse accolades including 1st place in the Rossini Award competition with the Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert. She won 1st place at the Musical Merit Foundation of Greater San Diego two years in a row and was a finalist in the “Toti dal Monte” competition, also placing 2nd in the Carlo Morelli competition.
